20 Jan UGR Leads the Ethical Analysis of Artificial Human DNA Creation
The University of Granada (UGR) has led a pioneering international study examining the ethical implications of synthetic human DNA synthesis, a technique called synDNA, which promises to revolutionize biology and medicine. The study focuses on the potential transformations this technology could bring to key concepts such as genetic identity, privacy, and reproduction.
The synDNA technique involves the controlled assembly of the chemical bases that form DNA, allowing not only the replication of existing sequences but also the creation of new sequences designed by computer, opening up a wide variety of scientific and medical possibilities.
Although this technology is still under development, significant progress has already been made, such as the synthesis of complete bacterial genomes and fragments of human chromosomes. However, its potential raises profound ethical questions. Researchers warn that synDNA could transform the notion of genetic ownership and alter our understanding of the relationship between genes and personal identity. There is also concern about the classic distinction between somatic and germ cells, which could redefine the concept of reproduction and genetic paternity.
The study emphasises that, while advances in human DNA synthesis are promising, concerns about privacy, the creation of human genomes from scratch, and the implications of genetic alteration or enhancement also arise. The authors of the study stress that the goal is not to provide definitive answers, but to promote early ethical reflection on these issues before the technology becomes a reality.
